Law Enforcement The United States Essay - 1595 Words

We the People Law enforcement was designed in the early 1800’s by a man named Robert Peal, which is why cops are sometimes referred to as Bobbies in England; designing an organization of law enforcement that would protect people from harming other people (Christ). This was the model that we based our western law enforcement agencies on, until prohibition became a federal task in the 1920’s. This is when the federal government decided to take up the task of protecting people from themselves. Fast forward to the 1960’s; President Richard Nixon took a step forward with prohibition by declaring a war on drugs. This perpetual war has consumed much of our country’s financial resources and profoundly affected our criminal justice system, which governs us today. Many claim that this effect on our country has been negative, but others claim the necessity of it. There have been vast changes in our country since law enforcement instituted the principal of protecting people fro m themselves. Has this addition to the western model of law enforcement been beneficial? Is it logical in current times? Those who agree that prohibition is necessary often take a more conservative approach to politics, social policies, and law enforcement agendas. One of the most frequent objections to ending prohibition is that the end of these laws would condone drug use, cause more families to suffer, and increase crime. My Bigger Essay My BiggerIn Richard Wrights Native Son he magnificently describes how he came about of configuring Bigger. He used four specific people to create Bigger. Wright chose people that stood up for themselves almost to a fault. All of the people did have bad ends, but were nevertheless influential in Wrights, life good or bad. Wright drew from his personal experiences with these people to manufacture Bigger reactions. There were many social circumstances that held Bigger back from succeeding, like poverty, the depression and even his own stubbornness. Bigger was just reacting to his surrounding like Wrights people did, a good example of this is when Bigger kills the rat and keeps hitting it. That relates with when Bigger No. 5 drew the knife on the streetcar driver asking him to move to the colored car, and he said Make me. My people Im going to talk about didnt have to deal with such hardships, but did deal with more national and social challenges. My Bigger No.1 had a great influence and impact on my life for 17 years and still going. He was born in the first year of the baby boom era. His childhood was good and privileged but it was when he got out of high school when things changed. He did go to college for a half year and flunked out. The country was in a transition period from the mid 60s to the late 70s and Bigger No.1 was right in the middle of it and old enough to be affected by it all. And at this time if a man from 18 to 25 wasnt in college he had to get into the reserves or go to Vietnam where he might die. Bigger No.1 had missed the registration date for the reserves. He didnt believe in the war and had no intensions of going to it. He was afraid like many men were then, especially if they didnt like the cause. His father had been in WWII and had nearly died (when he and another man were walking side by side in the jungle they somehow switched places and two step later the other man was killed by a sniper). Bigger No. 1s father was in the Army and he did get into the reserves, one month late. Bigger No. 1 had to spend 4 years in the reserve. Now this wasnt the hard part, it was what was in the middle. He didnt know what he wanted to do with his life at this time so he took some odd jobs at a brewery and also worked on a couple presidential campaigns for McGovern, someones cause he did believe in. A couple of his good childhood friends had gone to Vietnam and came back messed up, alcoholics and always carrying guns. He didnt go back to school until he was 24. He started at a community college and then moved to Bradley University. Where he had to work hard for his grades and struggled at times. He ended up graduating with a degree in economics. Bigger No. 1 had about forty years under his belt when he came into my life. He has had an enormous impact on me and where Im at today. I couldnt have been able to play all the sports I did as a child and be good and attend Butler if it wasnt for him. He has always given me great advice on every decision I have had to make, from changing high schools, to going to a community college my first year for school. He always said at the end that it was totally up to me and he would be behind me in any chose I ever made. And thanks to him I feel I have made some good ones. She has also worked alongside Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The singer is one of the youngest on this list and has already made some wonderful contributions to the world of opera. It is expected that there will be many more to come. Anne Sofie von Otter This Mezzo-soprano is from Sweden. Although she is somewhat lesser known than the other opera singers mentioned, she is known to be incredibly talented. The main reason that she gained a lot of popularity is because she did an album with Elvis Costello. Some of her work has gained some controversy because it involves the Nazi concentration camps. It focuses on Auschwitz concentration camp in particular. In 2003 she received the Schock Prize awarded by a committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. These are just five of the best opera singers the entire world. Each of these singers are very different in their own way, but all of them have contributed to the opera genre throughout the years.

A Simple Heart - Flaubert essays Within the text of A Simple Heart, by Flaubert, readers find themselves face to face with a simple character. The character is named Felicite. Felicite, according to parenthood.com, means fortunate; Felicity, being off the root of Felicia, means happy. However, Felicites life path turns out to be very mocking to the name she was given. Throughout this book, readers have a hard time finding any fortune or happiness within the context of Felicites simple life. From an outsiders view, Felicites life is not fortunate by any stretch of the imagination. At an early age, Felicites parents died and she was essentially left without a family. She was taken in by a farmer where she was mistreated and beaten and then fired for a crime she did not commit. After this point, she met a man who wooed and romanced her, only to be abandoned by him. Her life was not happy, as the story depicted. At this point, she gave way to a burst of extravagant grief. She threw herself on the ground, cried aloud, called on the good God, and groaned, all alone in the country till sunrise (Flaubert, 6). She was eventually taken into Madame Aubains residence, where she spent most of the passing of this book. Madame Aubains residence is the perfect place for her, and thusly it melted her sorrows. She spends the beginning of her time there playing with the children allowing them to ride on her as if she were a horse. Madame Aubain eventually suggests that she not kiss the children so frequently and so plentifully. Flaubert writes, Madame Aubain told her to stop kissing them all the time, which hurt her deeply (Flaubert, 7). Felicite, in her simplicity, was full of love for people as well. At one point, Felicite, Madame Aubain, and her two children, Paul and Virginie, were confronted with a bull. Rather than run and cause the bull to stampede, Felicite retired steadily...

Global Warming and Geomorphology Essay

In his article â€Å"Global Warming and Geomorphology†, David K. C. Jones attempts to distinguish between the doom and gloom predictions surrounding and offer a more realistic approach to the effects that climate change will have on the geological and biosphere aspects of the planet and specifically on the British Isles. Climate fluctuation based on the presence of so-called greenhouse gases has been occurring for most of the last geological period. At issue, however, are several factors that have not been considered in previous periods of rapid climate change including the impact of humanity on greenhouse gases and humanity’s knowledge of its impact (Jones, 124). This knowledge of humanity’s impact on geomorphology can be used for either gain in the coming global change or can be used to incite doomsday predictions. Jones theorizes that geomorphologic change may have happened this rapidly in the British Isles at the end of the last ice age, but that since humanity was not aware of it or could simply respond to the changes as they happened, modern man may have an advantage to protect his environment. The problem with the knowledge that humanity has affected global climate change is that it also points out how much we do not know. The author discusses this in terms of regionalization, the idea that some global effects of climate change will only affect certain regions. The effects he identified as potentials were: (i) The likelihood of catastrophic outcomes; (ii) The potential distribution of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ within an economy, both over space and through time; (iii) Whether winners and losers can be reliably identified through improved modeling in sufficient time to allow effective policy formulation; (iv) Evaluation of the costs and benefits of climatic change prevention compared with those generated by responding to changed climate through adjustment; and (v) Evaluation of the costs of attempting to maintain the status quo compared with managed adaptation to changing environmental conditions. † (Jones, 126) In essence, Jones begin his argument by saying that it is the socio-economic factors of global warming which might be more devastating to humanity than the actual physical changes on the planet. Much ado, he says, has been made about the effect the rising of the mean sea level on the planet could have in areas such as Bangladesh, where 9 percent of the population would be affected by a rising sea level, creating millions of climate refugees or in Egypt, where the nation could lose as much as 15 percent of its farmland to rising water (Jones, 127). None of these factors threatens the existence of humanity, but they do threaten life as we know it. Changes in weather patterns, top soil erosion and rainfall could have enormous effects on agricultural production, for instance, which may have a major effect on the world’s economy, but it is unlikely to have such a far-reaching effect as to produce global food shortages. Jones does not completely negate the idea that humanity could face dire consequences associated with global climate change, but he does argue that they are more likely to be economic than physical. (127). However, Jones also argues that the ability to predict the impact of global warming on geomorphology and the biosphere is somewhat limited. Specifically, he claims that: â€Å"Predicting changes in the atmospheric composition of greenhouse gases remains problematic because of uncertainty as to existing sources, pathways, fluxes and stores of the various gases involved, combined with difficulties of estimating future patterns of human inputs (Houghton et al. , 1990, 1992; DOE, 1991; Wigley and Raper, 1992) ; 2 Climate is the great integrator and, therefore, reflects a huge range of influences, both global and extra-terrestrial, some natural others human-induced, working at varying temporal and spatial scales. Both identifying and predicting the influences of greenhouse gases are, therefore, extremely difficult; 3 The relationship between greenhouse gases and climatic parameters is not simple because of both positive and negative feedback mechanisms, step-wise changes resulting from the existence of threshold conditions, synergies, and the complex influence of the oceans and their circulation patterns ; 4 Predicting change remains hampered by lack of knowledge regarding system parameters (e. g. ocean-atmosphere coupling) and the awesome magnitude of the computing task required by the most sophisticated models. † (Jones, 126-127) Perhaps the most important part of the thesis that Jones is trying to make is that once we have accepted that global warming is affected by human action, we must therefore accept that we can affect how significant that climate change will be. Specifically, Jones talks about the potential impact of actions taken to mitigate global warming including attempts to reduce the production of greenhouse gases and actions taken with regard to soil shift which is likely to occur rapidly during the temperature increase. Efforts to discuss beach erosion, cliff erosion and affects on deltas and coral islands should emphasize what actions can be taken to lessen the effect of rising ocean levels. Any action then taken to attempt to control these forces of natures will have a substantial effect on the outcome related to those climate changes. The first thing I noticed about this article is that it was published nearly 15 years ago, making some of its basic assumptions rather obsolete. For example, Jones discusses the massive computer power needed to perform the complex projections related to weather patterns and global warming. While it is possible that this limitation was considered a severe one in 1993, the rapid expansion of computer processing power means that more recent looks at global warming can attempt to analyze weather-related data and infer probability based on those history patterns. Furthermore, the computer models can be very detailed and discuss specific projected ocean levels in individual cities or nations and over a specific time frame. No longer is it just a cataclysmic claim that the sea levels will rise, but it is a specific claim regarding how much water will be where. The second thing I noticed about this article was that it was published in the midst of some of the worst flooding in modern United States history, the great flood of 1993 on the Mississippi River. Flood levels that year reached beyond the 100-year-floodplain and ignited questions about the effects of changing weather patterns on agriculture and population centers in the central United States. Since then, we have seen major flooding along several major rivers in the United States including the Rio Grande, the Missouri River and the Ohio River, while at the same time seeing the Colorado River suffer from enormous drought conditions, creating a lack of potable water for major western American cities. On the British Isles, we recently observed massive flooding along the Thames River and associated death and destruction. Already, just 15 years after Jones’ article, we are seeing the effects of global warming as weather patterns shift causing record heat waves in Europe, killing hundreds, and shifts in the American food producing states where rain seems to come at inappropriate times or inappropriate amounts. Next, I began to consider Jones’ theory that massive global climate change is primarily concerning most people because of the economic shifts it will likely cause. If several countries see their major crops begin to die out because of a climate shift, will we see the food production belts shift further northward and further southward from the equator? And, what effect will this have on the habitable portions of the world? As additional areas of the world become classified as tropical and subtropical, what will be the effect on population patterns? Will regions now largely devoted to population centers need to give the land back to agrarian tasks? Already we are seeing the effects of the global climate shift in India and Pakistan. India with about 1 billion people does not have the ecological resources to support its population, including, but not limited to, clean water. This contributes to the political instability of the region as Pakistan and other Indian neighbors face regular mass immigration from India. These massive population shifts are causing or contributing to political strife worldwide. Likewise, as food production suffers because populations are no longer nomadic and able to follow the seasons to appropriate growing conditions, it seems likely that increased international strife will develop over the supply of natural resources ranging from deciduous trees to natural grains. Further impacting this is a move to biofuels as an attempt to curb the production of greenhouse gases. So far, we have been able to observe that the high demand for grains and sugar cane to be converted in to ethanol and other biofuels has begun to drive up the cost of food stuffs on an international basis. As some point, the system will break and people will demand that they be able to afford to eat. Perhaps the most interesting portion of Jones’ article is his claim that the doomsday predictions are overblown and that climate change is not necessarily a cataclysmic event. Though it is unlikely that human-induced climate change will be the cause of an extinction event, it appears more likely that the economic and political strife caused by the climate change may cause severe population reducing events including limited warfare or extinction events such as a nuclear confrontation. Given the recent receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize to American Albert Gore Jr. for his work on informing the public about global warming, the lessons of Jones’ article are particularly timely. His advice that a plan for mitigating the effects of global warming needs to be developed and implemented beginning in the 1990s and extending to 2050 is very well received. The only tragedy is that this advice was soundly ignored for the first decade after he gave it and real attention to global warming has only come in recent years as a result of the Kyoto Treaty and efforts like those of Gore. It seems unthinkable that the debate over the validity of the science of global warming still exists when there is evidence of its existence and of humanity’s effect on it. I feared at first when reading Jones’ introduction that he was going to be one of the people who claim that the climate shift is part of a semi-predictable pattern of geological history as so many naysayers are wont to do. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that his analysis acknowledges that it is happening at an accelerated rate because of the impact of humanity and his statements in support of the idea that humanity can thus also mitigate its impact on the globe and on the species. More importantly perhaps is that some of Jones’ suggestions can be applied to mitigating the effects of global climate even if the climate change is a completely natural cycle unaffected by the pollutants added to the atmosphere by humanity. Efforts to prevent soil erosion and to minimize building in floodplains make simple sense. Anyone who simply accepts the fact of changing weather patterns can easily see the logic in these efforts regardless of whether they have any desire to reduce their carbon footprint. Using technological advances to help prevent soil loss during flood events and to insist that populations take climate change into consideration are of value regardless of the causes of global warming. Furthermore, Jones’ explanation regarding the geological history of interglacial periods can be viewed as reassuring to even those who are convinced of the human factor in global warming. At some times, the earth has undergone rapid ecological change in the past and the biosphere has not been destroyed. Therefore, his conclusions that global warming is neither something to be ignored nor the world ending event that it has been portrayed as is a very lucid approach. Too many zealots follow the anti-global warming crusades with a fervor that is as unhealthy as ignoring the issue could be. Simple changes in everyone can help prevent the need to massively adjust our lifestyles by mid-century. Efforts must be made to preserve the coastlines as much as possible and to prevent soil erosion when flooding occurs. Simple efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions should be attempted as well and people should adjust to the ideas of different crop patterns and therefore a different distribution of food resources. We should also prepare for an influx of immigrants from nations where receding coasts will leave populations with no place to live and we should take international action to address issues like the sub-Saharan drought in Africa, encouraging the sharing of natural resources like water among neighbor states. With these efforts now and an eye toward the issues that global warming will create in the relatively near future, we can prevent climate change from becoming an extinction event. Journey for Truth: The Life of Sojourner Essay

The contribution of the life, philosophy, and activism of Sojourner Truth was that she was effective in preaching to the community as a freedom fighter, abolitionist, and feminist. Representing many classes of people in Antebellum United States, she was able to illuminate for others the hardships and desires of black people, the poor and oppressed, and women. As slaves, blacks had no personal freedom. They had no rights to themselves or their families, were whipped and tortured, experienced segregation and denial of citizenship, were denied salaries, and, women especially, endured the devastating agony of having their babies and children stripped from them and sold off to other arrogant and inhumane slave masters. In an effort to encourage radical change in her time, Truth took up the risky cause of making speeches against the strong forces of evil and in support of the righteous values of freedom and respect. Liberating herself and other people was not limited by class, racial, economic, or gender lines, rather she held the torch of freedom as a beacon for all oppressed people to follow, calling for empowerment of the weak, tolerance for differences, and protection for all people (Waxman, 2007). Truth was born into slavery in the late 1790s, in a more rural area outside of the bustling New York City. At the age of nine, Truth, then named Isabella, was sold by the slave master away from her parents and one remaining sibling to another New York slave owner. For nearly thirty years, she experienced a life of extremely difficult conditions, being repeatedly sexually abused and physically assaulted, and some of her children were forcibly taken from her and sold into bondage. Luckily, after the New York Emancipation Act of 1827, Truth was freed along with other former slaves of this Northeastern region, and in 1843, Truth was inspired to assume her new name and began a mission of journeying across the country as an itinerant preacher, supporting the efforts of abolitionists and feminists in the North, becoming actively involved in breaking down the slave system and pressing for the rights of all subjugated people (Mullings, 2005). Truth’s most famous speech at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio in 1851 is a wonderful demonstration of the strength of her ideals and the power of her words. In an excerpt from Brah and Phoenix’s 2004 article, Truth is quoted as having preached: That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody helps me any best place. And ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm. I have plowed, I have planted, and I have gathered into barns. And no man could head me. And ain’t I a woman? I could work as much, and eat as much as any man–when I could get it–and bear the lash as well! And ain’t I a woman? I have borne children and seen most of them sold into slavery, and when I cried out with a mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me. And ain’t I a woman? (p. 77) Her sharply painful and moving words, rich with truth and experience, sent tides of strength and power through the country’s movement for all levels of freedom in regard to all kinds of people. In countering tyranny with liberty, and violence with peace, Truth became an emblem of the almost suffocated soul which was able to rise up, speak out, and lend valuable energy and motivation to the essential activism of her time. In defending her womanhood, her personhood, her right to full citizenship and social inclusion, Truth demanded respect during a time when evil was easily cast down the noses of the dishonorable elite. Standing firm in her beliefs and finding power in the spirituality of goodness, Truth was able to meet eyes with her oppressors and effectively shake the foundations of a flawed system.

These are the ways that pronouns are tested on the ACT. Subject vs. Object Pronouns Nouns, in relation to verbs, can be subjects or objects. Subjects "do" verbs and objects have verbs "done" to them: a dog (the subject noun) chases (the verb) its tail (the object noun). Regular nouns like dog or tail do not change depending on whether they are subjects or objects, but most pronouns do. For example, in the phrase "she likes him," the woman is the subject, so the pronoun is she; in the phrase "he likes her," the woman is the object, so the pronoun is her. Subject Pronouns Object Pronouns I you he she it we they me you him her it us them Examples Error: Me and my parents ate dinner. Corrected: My parents and I ate dinner. That vs. Who This concept is simple: who is the pronoun for a person or people, and that is the pronoun for everything else. Examples Error: The coach is the person that is in charge of the team's schedule. Corrected: The coach is the person who is in charge of the team's schedule. Error: The elephant is the animal who asks for the most treats. Corrected: The elephant is the animal that asks for the most treats. Error: The corporation is who owns this land. Corrected: The corporation is what owns this land. Pronoun Agreement When we use pronouns more than once in a sentence, we have to use the same perspective throughout. Examples Error: If a person wants to succeed in corporate life, you have to know the rules of the game. Note: In the second example, that the error is the commonly-used "their" to mean a singular noun (everyone); while this is used in common, everyday speech, using "their" as a possessive pronoun for a single person is not formally accepted as grammatically correct on the ACT. These singular nouns that seem plural (such as nobody, anyone, and each person), as well as "their" instead of the singular "he" or "his," are often tested in the hardest pronoun questions. Ambiguous Reference Wherever there is a pronoun, it should be obvious what the pronoun is "standing in" for. Examples Error: Ethel told Lucy that her pie was wonderful. Corrected: Ethel told Lucy that Lucy's pie was wonderful. Error: The files arranged by the temporary workers were out of order, so we sent them back to the main office. Corrected: The files arranged by the temporary workers were out of order, so we sent the files back to the main office. Error: Once Nora and Elise go to live with their husbands, they have to convert to their ways of living. Corrected: Once Nora and Elise go to live with their husbands, the husbands have to convert to their wives' ways of living. Verb Forms: Tense and Agreement There are two main issues with verbs tested on the ACT: verb tense and subject-verb agreement. The subject is the noun that "does" the verb (below, the subject of the sentences is they.) Verb Tense There are six basic verb tenses, two for each time period: Simple Present: They sing. Present Perfect: They have sung. Simple Past: They sang. Past Perfect: They had sung. Future: They will sing. Future Perfect: They will have sung. All of these tenses are created out of three forms of "to sing": sing (present), sang (past), and sung (past participle). As you can see, some of the correct verb forms are created by adding forms of the words "have" and "do." The idea is to keep verbs in a single sentence within the same time period. Examples Error: The boy insisted that he has paid for the candy bars. Corrected: The boy insisted (past) that he had paid (past perfect) for the candy bars. Error: The doctor suggested bed rest for the patient, who suffers from a bad cold. Corrected: The doctor suggested (past) bed rest for the patient, who suffered (past) from a bad cold. Error: I told him that he can drop by any time and I will be happy to help him. Corrected: I told (past) him that he could (past) drop by any time and I would (past) be happy to help him. Subject/Verb Agreement Nouns and verbs are both parts of speech with number: they are written differently if they refer to just one thing or multiple things. Subject/verb agreement just means that the noun and the verb have the same number (singular or plural). For example, one dog runs fast, but two dogs run fast. Examples Matching subjects and verbs are underlined, while verbs that don't match subjects are bold. Error: The climate in those cities are uncomfortably humid. Corrected: The climate (singular) in those cities is (singular) uncomfortably humid Error: There was a rat and three buckets of whitewash in the corner of the basement. Corrected: There were (plural) a rat and three buckets of whitewash (plural) in the corner of the basement. Error: Ms. Russell is trying to read a book outside but a swarm of flies keep distracting her. Corrected: Ms. Russell is trying to read a book outside but a swarm (singular) of flies keeps (singular) distracting her. Comparisons These are pretty simple. Comparisons between two things are formed by the construction "x is more/less [adjective]/[adjective]-er than y." For example, Bill is more friendly than Louis. Comparisons between three or more things, however, are formed by the construction "x is the most [adjective]/[adjective]-est of the [things]." For example, Lucy was the most adept student in the class or The cheetah is the fastest land animal. The ACT tests this skill by mismatching the types of comparison: Examples Error: Between butterflies and spiders, humans admire butterflies the most. Corrected: Between butterflies and spiders, humans admire butterflies more. Error: Cheetahs are the faster of all land mammals. Corrected: Cheetahs are the fastest of all land mammals. Then vs. Than Then is mainly an adverb, often used to situate actions in time. That was then; this is now. Than is a conjunction used mainly in making comparisons. Shaq is taller than Kobe. "Might Have" vs. "Might Of" "Might have" is correct. "Might of" is not. She might have gotten lost. Idioms Idioms are expressions that mean something different than the actual words they use, such as "rain cats and dogs" or "kick the bucket." But in English we also have short phrases made of words that always go together, and these are also tested on the ACT. Examples Error: Maria stumbled in her old rocking horse in the garage. Corrected: Maria stumbled upon her old rocking horse in the garage. Error: Loud guard dogs keep burglars in bay. Corrected: Loud guard dogs keep burglars at bay. Error: Arturo and I happened for meet at the library. Corrected: Arturo and I happened to meet at the library. Verbal Phrases The ACT particularly loves one type of idiom: verbal phrases, which are verb + preposition pairs. They always want to know if you know which is the correct preposition, as in the incorrect sentences below. Examples Error: The show was followed on an encore. Corrected: The show was followed by an encore. Error: She is responsible of returning her library books. Corrected: She is responsible for returning her library books. There are two types of clauses: independent (can be a complete sentence) and dependent (must be attached to an independent clause in order to be a complete sentence). An independent clause has a subject-verb pair and does not start with a word or phrase that makes the clause dependent, such as "when" or "because" (as in example 3 below). In the examples below, the subjects are underlined and the verbs are in bold. A Sentence Fragment is a sentence made of anything less than an independent clause. To fix it, we add an independent clause. Examples Fragment: Such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering. Corrected: There are many STEM careers, such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering. Fragment: Saving her team at a time when they needed her. Corrected: The goalie was saving her team at a time when they needed her. Fragment: Because the one I have now isn't working out too well. Corrected: I need a new roommate, because the one I have now isn't working out too well. A Run-on Sentence is made of multiple independent clauses joined by only a comma or no punctuation at all. It can be fixed with a comma and conjunction (example 1 below), a joining word like and or because (example 2 below), or a semicolon (example 3 below). Examples Run-on sentence: My favorite Mediterranean spread is hummus it is very garlicky. Corrected: My favorite Mediterranean spread is hummus, as it is very garlicky. Run-on sentence: I rushed out to the shop, I had no milk left. Corrected: I rushed out to the shop because I had no milk left. Run-on sentence: Mary likes dogs she has a beagle. Corrected: Mary likes dogs; she has a beagle. Parallel Construction Parallel construction is when we present a list of things all in the same way. For example, if two things in a list are adverbs, the third should also be an adverb. If two things in a list are "to [verb]," then the other should also be in the form "to [verb]." To fix it, we just phrase all of the items in the list the same way. Examples Error: The couple bought the concert tickets, arrived at the theater, and went about finding their seats. Corrected: The couple bought the concert tickets, arrived at the theater, and found their seats. Error: The deer moved carefully, quietly and in a way that was slow. Corrected: The deer moved carefully, quietly and slowly. Error: Peeling hazelnuts requires skill, patience, and the ability to persevere. Corrected: Peeling hazelnuts requires skill, patience, and perseverance. Faulty Modifiers A modifier is a word or phrase that describes (a.k.a. modifies) something. There are two kinds of modifier problems tested on the ACT: dangling modifiers and misplaced modifiers. Dangling Modifier A dangling modifier is a modifier that begins a sentence, has a comma after it, and has the noun it describes NOT placed after the comma. In the first example below, for example, the modifier is "coating the sidewalk," and it describes the snow. Since "we" is the first word after the comma, not "snow," "coating the sidewalk" is a dangling modifier. Modifiers are underlined, while nouns being modified are in bold. Examples Error: Coating the sidewalk, we trudged through the heavy snow. Corrected: We trudged through the heavy snow coating the sidewalk. Error: Long and tangled, it was difficult to comb the child's hair. Corrected: Long and tangled, the child's hair was difficult to comb. Error: Exhausted and weak, the soldiers' uniforms were covered in frost. Corrected: Exhausted and weak, the soldiers were covered in frost. Misplaced Modifier A misplaced modifier is a modifier that's not close enough to the thing it describes, so it looks like it's describing the wrong thing. In the first example below, for example, the modifier "on the sale rack" seems to be describing how the jacket fits the rack, which isn't right. To correct it, we move the modifier closer to the noun it describes. Examples Error: The jacket was too small on the sale rack. Corrected: The jacket on the sale rack was too small. Error: Ray wore his one collared shirt to the job interview, which was stained with mustard. Corrected: Ray wore his one collared shirt, which was stained with mustard, to the job interview. RHETORICAL SKILLS We're now going to cover the Rhetorical skills you need for ACT English. Where Usage skills tend to focus on smaller subparts of a sentence, Rhetorical skills broaden the scope to consider how sentences are constructed, and how sentences fit together with each other. Relevance This skill is deciding what the passage is about and whether a certain detail belongs in that category or not. Which sentences, if any, are irrelevant in the paragraph below? [1] My uncle explained to me that bonsai cultivation was part of our ancestors’ culture that could remain with me for my whole life. [2] He said that bonsai as old as Hoshi didn’t need much maintenance, but he would teach me what I needed to know. [3] He added that I could easily do everything necessary for Hoshi's care in my dorm room. [4] It’s funny to think that Hoshi is older than my great grandparents. Bonsai are grown from parts of normal-sized trees that are kept small by pruning and planting in small pots. [5] They thrive in only partial sunlight but need to be pruned several times per year and kept in temperatures that stay well above freezing year-round. [6] Bonsai also require careful watering, and Hoshi in particular needs to live outside in the summer to get the best light and inside in the winter because of the cold. If you said Sentence 4 is irrelevant, you're correct. The paragraph is all about bonsai cultivation, and Sentence 4 is about the age of bonsai trees. Author Intent For this skill, we need to be able to identify the writer's topic, point, or goal, and the ways she achieves it. What is the writer's point, t in the above paragraph? The correct answer is something along the lines of "the idea of Ra shows that people personify objects they depend on." Organization: Transitional Logic The ACT wants to test our ability to transition between ideas within a sentence, a paragraph, or a whole essay. Examples Error: All through high school, we were inseparable; however, even our parents eventually became friends. Corrected: All through high school, we were inseparable; in fact, even our parents eventually became friends. Error: The painting is a fascinating work because, by representing women in such a novel way, it questions both representational art and traditional notions of femininity. Nonetheless, most critics agree that it is a groundbreaking work in the development of both cubism and modern art as a whole. Corrected: The painting is a fascinating work because, by representing women in such a novel way, it questions both representational art and traditional notions of femininity. Indeed, most critics agree that it is a groundbreaking work in the development of both cubism and modern art as a whole. Organization: Macro Logic Macro-logic is the skill of putting the parts of an essay in the right order. Fortunately, on the ACT, there are tons of clues as to what order sentences and paragraphs should go in. Can you spot the out-of-place sentence(s) in the passage below? [1] He wore a sailor’s uniform and used papers given to him by a free black sailor, showed his ingenuity and courage. [2] After a number of previous failed attempts, Douglass finally escaped to freedom. [3] He took two boats and two trains to get from Havre de Grace, Maryland to a safehouse in New York City, completing his journey to freedom in less than twenty four hours. [4] He received the uniform from Anna Murray, a free black woman in Baltimore who later became his wife. If you said Sentence 4 is out of place, you were right. It should go after Sentence 1. Conciseness and Redundancy There are times when saying something twice is needed: for emphasis, to review a difficult topic, or to explain something more clearly. None of these apply on the ACT. The two ways this skill is tested on the ACT is through wordy sentences and redundant sentences. They're related, but different. Wordy Sentences Examples Error: To travel around Berlin, we have the option of choosing many different transport systems; among them are the U-Bahn, or the underground rail system similar to New York’s Subway, and the tram, which is another form of transport that involves railways that have tracks on the streets. Corrected: To travel around Berlin, we might take the U-Bahn, or subway; we could also take the tram. Error: High-quality learning environments are a necessary precondition for facilitation and enhancement of the ongoing learning process. Corrected: Good schools enable people to learn more. Error: With reference to the fact that the company is deficient in manufacturing and production space, the contract may in all probability be awarded to some other enterprise. Corrected: The company may not be awarded the contract because it lacks production facilities. Redundant Sentences Examples Error: Many uneducated citizens who have never attended school continue to vote for better schools. Corrected: Many uneducated citizens continue to vote for better schools. Error: The eye of a storm is a region of mostly calm weather found at the center of a tropical cyclone. Corrected: The eye is a region of mostly calm weather found at the center of a tropical cyclone. Error: The teenage woman who wanted to audition was talented, but only sixteen years old. Corrected: The woman who wanted to audition was talented, but only sixteen years old. Formality and Tone Every piece of writing has a level of formality, from none (a note passed in class) to maximum (official government or legal documents). The skill here is understanding the formality of the text (which is always pretty close to a book you'd read in English class). What's the informal phrase in the passage below? Examples Many cultures in recorded history have venerated and even worshipped the Sun. To some civilizations, the Sun represents all life; to others, the reason for the cycles of day and night. To Plato, the Sun represented the offspring of all that was good. In other myths, though, the Sun might have another kind of significance. It's for sure that the Sun carries great significance for many cultures both ancient and modern. If you said "it's for sure," you got it! It's less formal than the rest of the passage, which sounds quite academic. That's It! That's every rule tested on the ACT, as well as the ways in which they are likely to appear.
